Most fires in high-rises will be fought using the standpipe system, but there are a few situations where stretching a preconnected line will be sufficient. This is often the case when the fire is in the ground floor or below-ground floor of a smaller high-rise. The important point here: Choose a hoseline size and length that will be effective for the contents and building layout. The 150′ blitz line is generally useless on these types of fires. Instead, consider a 1½” or, better yet, 2″ or 2½” hose at great enough lengths to navigate obstacles such as doorways.
Reaching the Fire
In some instances you can abandon standpipe operations in high-rises where applicable. Make sound decisions and go into battle with the right tools.
